Property Taxes!

Posted on: April 22, 2025

As we approach the April 30 deadline, I wanted to remind you about the importance of filing for your Homestead Exemption if you haven’t already. A Homestead Exemption removes part of your property’s value from taxation, which can significantly lower your property tax bill.

If you own your home, reside in the home as your primary residence, and do not claim an exemption elsewhere, you may qualify for a General Residence Homestead Exemption. If you purchased a home in 2024, make sure to file your Homestead Exemption form by April 30, 2025, to take advantage of this benefit.

Here are a few key updates and reminders:
1. New Texas Law: Starting in 2023, Texas homeowners must now verify their Homestead Exemption every five years to keep it active. If you fail to verify your exemption, you could risk losing it. Be on the lookout for notifications from your county appraisal district about this requirement.
2. Immediate Filing for New Buyers: If you purchased a home in 2024 and the Seller did not have a Homestead Exemption on the property for the current tax year, you may file for your exemption immediately after closing.
3. Online Filing: Many counties now allow you to file for your Homestead Exemption online, making the process quick and convenient.

If you’re unsure whether you’ve filed or need to verify your exemption, I recommend reaching out to your county appraisal district.
